Jaco Documentary

I backed up and listened to the earlier segments of the BBC Radio documentary on Jaco Pastorius partially linked in the previous post. I link them here below. The total running time is somewhere between 90 minutes and 2 hours.

Part I

I think it’s worth listening to, either as an introduction to Jaco or for Jaco fans. Often it’s a bit long on music clips and short on commentary, which is good or bad depending on how you look at it. Quite an impressive line-up for interviews, including Wayne Shorter, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, other greats, and a number of Jaco’s friends and family.

Part II

In my younger days, I knew the early and middle Weather Report and loved it, but for various reasons stopped following them right about when Jaco joined. I was vaguely aware of Jaco and knew “Birdland” which I thought was catchy (now I think it’s brilliant). But it’s only been about the past year that I’ve rediscovered Jaco through the magic of Youtube, and in that time I’ve bought most of the major albums he was on, and there are a few more I have my eyes on. My estimation keeps going up.
