Zappa & Watermelon in Easter Hay

Zappa has come up recently in online discussions of . . er . . . advanced robotics. Actually, I always liked Zappa’s instrumental stuff best, and some of his guitar solos maybe best of all.

This is from a 1988 concert, a soaring, plaintive Zappa guitar showcase. The tune is from the end of Joe’s Garage. The time signiature is either 9/4 or alternating 4/4 and 5/4. I think it’s that extra ninth beat that gives it the strong lilting feeling every time round before the down beat.

    Musical trivia for Nightsky:
The song “Sy Borg” actually reprises the reggae beat from a song earlier in the story (first LP in the 3 LPs that made up Joe’s Garage). The song was “Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up.” It’s one of my Zappa favorites! The narrative context is that Joe gets a STD (or do we say “an” STD?) from a gal named Lucille.

“Sy Borg” overlays a lot of synthesizer over the same reggae beat to give it a weird and somewhat cheesy futuristic feel. Lucille is mentioned by Joe when he is . . . engaged with Sy Borg: “You’re much more fun than Mary. And cleaner than Lucille. What have I been missing all these years?”

That Zappa! Such a cheerful, optimistic songwriter. 😀
