Stanley Clarke & Al Di Meola & Jean Luc Ponty & Renaissance

From The Rite of Strings (1995)

(UPDATE: Studio version was discontinued, so here’s a live reunion instead.)
Stanley Clarke (bass) and Al Di Meola (guitar) are utter virtuosos on their instruments, and are known primarily for playing with Chick Corea’s legendary Return to Forever. Jean-Luc Ponty (violin) played with Mahavishnu Orchestra and Zappa. They all did quite a lot of work on their own, too. This accoustic collaboration is an inspired idea and sounds sweet. Al Di Meola is characteristically a speed demon on guitar but sometimes lacking in emotion, so when he goes accoustic you can see he’s human after all. I know it’s supposed to be Jean-Luc with a hyphen in the title, but this theme (in addition to turning an ampersand into a record player) apparently turns a hyphen into a dripping syringe. Yeah, I don’t know either.
