Birdland in Three Interpretations &

Probably the biggest crossover hit in jazz history, by Weather Report on the album Heavy Weather (1977).

This album and Jaco help turned Weather Report from a college circuit band into a stadium filling band. There are songs on this album that I actually like better than Birdland, but of course it’s great, a classic track.

Here is a big band trumpet blast version by Maynard Fergusen:

Performed on the Mike Douglas show (197?).

A neat but maybe-getting-dated vocal version by The Manhattan Transfer from the album Extensions (1979):

I very nearly posted their live rendition, which has a lot of energy, but I was put off by the cutesy performance in the stage set.

  1. I always wondered what happened to Maynard’s baby brother.

    [Kinda NSFW]

They won’t let me see that–can’t be streamed outside the US. Now I’m REALLY curious!
