I noted in the previous Pamyu post that Kyary’s songs and videos tend to predictable in retrospect. This means that they make me think, “Why didn’t I see that one coming?”
The upcoming single “Invader Invader” (snippets of which appear in the latest g.u. campaign featured in the aforementioned post) is a case in point. Of course! Space aliens and archaic video games. It seems so predictable in retrospect. All the elements are there for the perfect Kyary stew: the childish cuteness element, the wierdness/freakiness element, the geekiness/otaku element, the danger element, the transformation/self-invention element. The formula is to take a familiar pop-culture trope that’s not necessarily considered “fashionable” or “cute,” and perform the usual Kyaryan alchemy on it, whereby it emerges as the perfect embodiment of Kyaryan Kyuteness. Of course a space alien invasion is the cutest thing imaginable! How could anyone have ever thought otherwise?!?
And it was the same with “Fashion Monster” (monster/haunted house trope), “Ninjari Ban Ban” (ninja/anime trope), and to some extent “Tsukema Tsukeru” (Alice in Wonderland/Red Queen trope).
I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of Kyary playing with my mind like that. It’s time to resist! If Kyary’s songs are predictable in retrospect, they should be predictable in advance, too, and that’s just what we’re going to do, people! Predict the next Kyaryan trope!
I predicted several in the linked post but ignore those, and give me your predictions. Let the games begin! In the absence of predictions, I’m going to start dropping my own in Comments.
