Amy Winehouse & Someone to Watch Over Me

From her debut album Frank (2003).

I started to appreciating this song after digging on Blossom Dearie’s version, then I ran across this amazing rendition. Amy Winehouse was clearly a powerful and profoundly gifted jazz vocalist; it even feels like she’s holding back something here. That said, I think they went with a pretty conventional lounge music approach, especially after the intro (which is stupendous), and the song ends up coming off just a tad too stylized and affected. They could have turned this into something even better by stretching it a bit with the rhythm section. But gotta appreciate that little Ella Fitzgerald homage at 2:55.
